About this program

Many survivors return to their abusers for one simple reason: they can't afford not to. Without money of their own, leaving isn't a real option. Social Income changes that. A regular income means survivors can choose to leave, stay away, and rebuild their lives — on their own terms.

Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone sits on the West African coast, home to around 8.6 million people speaking Krio as the common language alongside English. Founded in 1787 as a settlement for formerly enslaved people, it gained independence in 1961, then endured a decade-long civil war ending in 2002 and the 2014 Ebola outbreak. Today most Sierra Leoneans live on less than three dollars a day.
