About this program

This program supports smallholder cacao farmers in Kenema, Sierra Leone, whose livelihoods rise and fall with one of the world's most volatile markets. A stable income lets farmers plan beyond the next harvest β€” and invest in rejuvenating their gardens with healthier, more resilient trees. What's good for the farmer is good for the climate: thriving cacao gardens store carbon, preserve tree cover, and secure yields and family incomes for decades to come.

Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone sits on the West African coast, home to around 8.6 million people speaking Krio as the common language alongside English. Founded in 1787 as a settlement for formerly enslaved people, it gained independence in 1961, then endured a decade-long civil war ending in 2002 and the 2014 Ebola outbreak. Today most Sierra Leoneans live on less than three dollars a day.
