About this program

This program supports young mothers and their newborns during one of life's most decisive moments. The weeks around birth shape two futures at once: a mother's health, confidence, and economic footing, and a child's chance at a healthy start. Support that arrives in this window reaches two people โ€” and lays the groundwork for a lifetime.

Liberia

Liberia sits on the West African coast, home to around 5.4 million people speaking a Liberian English creole alongside dozens of indigenous languages. Founded in 1822 as a settlement for freed American slaves, it became Africa's first republic in 1847, then collapsed into two devastating civil wars between 1989 and 2003 that killed roughly 250,000 people. Today most Liberians live on less than two dollars a day, making it one of the poorest countries in the world.
