Liberia sits on the West African coast, home to around 5.4 million people speaking a Liberian English creole alongside dozens of indigenous languages. Founded in 1822 as a settlement for freed American slaves, it became Africa's first republic in 1847, then collapsed into two devastating civil wars between 1989 and 2003 that killed roughly 250,000 people. Today most Liberians live on less than two dollars a day, making it one of the poorest countries in the world.
