Kenya sits on the East African coast, home to around 55 million people speaking Swahili and English as official languages alongside more than 60 indigenous ones. A British colony from the 1890s, it gained independence in 1963 after the brutal suppression of the Mau Mau uprising, then weathered decades of single-party rule, disputed elections, and post-election violence that killed over a thousand people in 2007. Today nearly a third of Kenyans still live below the poverty line, despite Nairobi's status as one of the continent's major economic and tech hubs.
